Perlos Corporation, one of the
world's leading suppliers of handset mechanics, inaugurated its
manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur, in Chennai, on October 4,
2007. Spread over 26,000 sq metres of land in the Nokia Telecom SEZ,
the first phase of the facility has been established at an
investment of $ 30 million.
This exclusive facility will cater
to the growing demand of mobile device handset manufacturers as well
as to the electronics manufacturing service companies in India. The
facility was inaugurated by the Ambassador of Finland, Asko Numminen,
and Shaktikanta Das, Secretary, Industries Department, Government of
Tamil Nadu.
Perlos will initially cater to the
needs of Nokia India and later to other customers in India and to
the global market. Construction commenced in November 2006 and the
first shipment was made in mid-August 2007. The built-up area of the
plant is about 20,000 sq metres. It currently employs 770 people of
whom 40 per cent are women.
Matti Virtanen, president and CEO,
Perlos Corporation, said, "India will be one of our key growth areas
as it has emerged as one of the top five telecom markets in the
world. The Chennai unit will be Perlos' eighth volume manufacturing
facility across the globe. In this business, one has to be near the
end-customers so that the production pace is fast and the volumes
are dictated directly by the local demand."
Jarmo Kolehmainen, managing
director, Perlos Telecommunication and Electronic Components (India)
Pvt Ltd, said the Indian telecom market is developing the fastest
among all sectors in India. The mobile phone market is booming with
an addition of four million subscribers every month, he pointed out.
"Chennai is a great location with
favourable government support, availability of professional labour
and conducive business environment. We are confident that our
manufacturing facility in Chennai will enable us to icnrease our
production pace to meet the local demand," he added.
The Perlos Chennai unit will cover
the whole product lifecycle from product design to manufacturing
logistics and new product versions. It will utilise all of the core
technologies of Perlos such as injection moulding, assembling,
painting, printing and metal stamping.
