Yoga + Karate = Self Confidence

Society

In life, which has become mechanical, a man is confronted by worries, troubles and difficulties. Due to these restraints, he has become lackadaisical mentally and physically. In order to recuperate oneself, one has to concentrate on the inner self and there are plenty of ways to bring about this change. Meditation and Yoga are two such methods and can help a man to come out of this stupor. The human mind can perform great deeds with proper conditioning and training. It can influence the body to take up challenges and forge ahead. The individual should have the willingness and commitment to attempt them.

'Great feats are achieved not just by strength alone but by perseverance,' said Samuel Johnson. A shining example is the 26-year-old Ramji, from Nanganallur, who is an expert in Karate and Yoga. He has been running 'Sensui Ramji's Martial Art and Fitness Academy' since 1999. He started learning Yoga, at the age of 13, and has learnt to control both his mind and body. He learnt Kick Boxing too. He feels that for the present day youth, especially students, Karate can inculcate discipline and good behaviour. These yoga exercises can relieve one of worries and tensions.

A man is afflicted by various disorders like headache, leg pain, diabetes etc., in daily life. Ramji assures that with proper meditation, one can get cured of these ailments. He teaches Yoga and Karate in 14 schools, including Kendriya Vidyalaya, and does it for free which is worth mentioning here. Generally students enrolling to learn Karate have their eyes set upon procuring a black belt. But Ramji feels that one should learn it mainly to use it in one's life at the right time/situation, to defend oneself and retaliate when in danger.

To say that the Art of Defence originated from Tamil Nadu is by no means an exaggeration. Bhodhidharma, a monk from Kanchipuram, went to China to spread Buddhism. He built the temple of Shaolin and through him the art of Karate spread to other countries. Ramji has presented 35 episodes about Karate in SCV network. This brought him to the limelight and his programmes were telecast in Jaya and Vijay TV networks. He obtained First Degree Black Belt in Isshinryu, in 1999, Third Degree Black Belt in International Kick Boxing Karate Organisation and Third Degree Black Belt in Kenshikan Shito-ryu. His main aim in life is to teach what he has learnt to the younger generation. Nearly 200 students come to his school to learn Karate and Yoga.

The essential aspect of his training is the combined teaching of Yoga, Karate and Kick Boxing. One has to believe in one's own ability to perform, to deliver, to get out of the circumstances one is at the moment. Self-confidence gives the power to persist in what one does with the hope that in the end everything will be fine and one will emerge victorious. A standing example is Veerukumar who had lost a leg, joined his school and after practising strenuously the exercises now rides a cycle with one leg. He says that Yoga and Meditation have given him the courage and confidence to face the world.

Ramji, on September 11th (2002), under the concept - 'No More Terrorism' lay down, in front of thousands of spectators, on a bed made of nails and covered himself with 150 kg of fragments of glass. He says that the practise of Yoga made it all possible. He is of the view that unless we keep our body in good condition, we cannot achieve anything.

''To accomplish great things we must not only act but dream, not only plan but also believe.'' This young man, Ramji, hopes to accomplish something in his life and for those who seek glory, if the heart is willing, the sky is the limit.
