It was a legendary venue - the Mylapore Fine Arts Club (MFAC) and Gayathri
Girish, a disciple of the veteran Madurai TN Seshagopalan gave a concert
that was outstanding, in every sense of the word. Right from the brisk Meru
Samana laced with imaginative multi-patterned Swarams, true to the TNS
School, the concert sustained the interest of the audience throughout.
The Krithi Kulabirudunu was sung preceded by a scholarly Alapana of
Devamanohari, which one rarely gets to hear these days. The Kambhoji Padam
Ivan Yaro brought tranquility and set up the stage for what was a
superlative Thodi. The Raga was elaborated in all its grandeur and
Dikshithar's masterpiece Shri Krishnam Bhaja Manasa was sung evoking a
serene and meditative mood. The Neraval and Swarams at Shanka Chakra again
bore ample testimony to Gayathri's erudition and the way she has imbibed the
intricacies from her stalwart-like Guru.
The Ragam Talam Pallavi was
in the soothing Amrithavarshini. The Talam was beautiful and the Pallavi in
Khanda Triputa Talam was rendered with Trikalam and all associated
intricacies with a high precision. Sanjeev on the violin gave good support
all the way through.
The percussion department included the
experienced Poongulam Subramaniam on Mrudangam and Madipakkam Murali on the
Ghatam and they played a brief yet good Tani. Post Pallavi, the Thukkada
segment included the melodious Ragamalika Bhavayami Raghuramam immortalized
by MS Subbulakshmi. A nice Virutham followed by Bharathiar's emotive
Chandiran Oliyil was sung and rounded off a concert to be cherished for
quite some time to come.
