North
Star is the
story of a
man who
returns to
India after
20 years, to
retrace his
roots.
Set in
the Madras
of 1960s and
late 70s,
North Star
brings to
life the
sights and
sounds of
the city,
while
revealing at
every turn
the
conservative
culture that
dominates
the lives of
its
populace. It
is a story
of many
flashbacks,
to the
hero’s
boyhood, his
father’s
youth, his
mother’s
past and the
hero’s life
in the
United
States.
Ultimately,
the story
switches to
the present,
as the plot
thickens and
unravels, as
the past
falls into
place, and
as his
search for
the heroine
races to a
gripping
climax.
In many
ways, the
hero of
North Star
is the city
of Madras.
The Madras
that has
been
forgotten,
but stays
evergreen in
hearts that
yearn for
the days
gone by. The
central
characters
in North
Star enact
their role
in various
locations in
the city, in
Cathedral
Road, T.
Nagar and in
Anna Nagar.
But if
there is a
hero among
locations,
it is
Cathedral
Road, the
open stretch
from Gandhi
Statue to
Chola to
Woodlands
Drive In.
Most of
the key
events take
place in
Drive In and
as a good
story
should, the
drama ends
where it
starts, at
drive in.
