Says Kalyani Somasundaram, a housewife who came with her family to catch a glimpse of the Vidiya Vidiya Kondattam (as Chennai Sangamam calls it), "Never ever in my life have I seen all this. I heard many people talking about this fest on the 13th night. I thought I will just come here and see for some 15 minutes, but I think after seeing all this, I will be staying till it gets over as all this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I 'am just enjoying myself!"

There were thappattam players, karagam dancers, theru koothu, folk drummers and with a never tiring energy and stamina, they played continuously for the over enthusiastic Chennaities.

With the drums playing on one side, the youngsters who came as groups danced with excitement and smile. With the decibels rising with the drummers one side, Silambattam and fire players came and the crowd gathered there to watch the fun. Says Mark Edwards, who has come from Russia to watch the gala, "I should say without any bias that Chennaities know how to have fun and they are a good and a perfect audience. Things like this never happen in our place and I did not want to miss out anything, so I' am just running around from venue to another to see the carnival." On the other hand, Natesan Park had the usual folk dance and music. Another added attraction was a vegetable carving which looked superb. Many people crowded around the carving just to click a few shots.

That looks wonderful. I never had a chance to see something like that in the five years I lived in Chennai. I hope it will be done many times again in the future: outdoor activities for the general public are a great asset.
