| Mother's Day - The Present Scene
Mother's Day? In India apart from the metros, people still
wonder what this is all about. In the metros, it is one more occasion to celebrate. Walk into any card shop today and you will find a separate section for Mother's Day cards. Almost all the local magazines, this week, have a special section or a minimum of one article devoted to Mother's Day.
Do we need a separate day to appreciate our moms? Is one day sufficient to appreciate them and then neglect them for the rest of the year? Instead, can we not do the same now and then? Highly debatable questions!!
There is a popular Jewish saying, "God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers."
The whole family revolves around this person and yet, we take her for granted at times. But scene has changed considerably when compared to yesteryears. Then 'Mother' conjured an image of gentleness, quietness, 'behind the scenes person' who was a silent pillar of strength to the family. Now with women venturing into different walks of life, smart and intelligent are virtues added to the earlier description. This has led to a tremendous change in the way of bringing up children and to tackle problems in almost all areas, personal.
VIBA of Chennai had conducted a Super Mom-Daughter contest. That show truly reflected the way most of the present mothers are. They modelled, danced, sang, painted, gave speeches the list is endless and mind you, the dances and songs not only included western numbers but our traditional styles too. Mrs. Aditi Gowarikar, (Ms. World) now a household name, has set a record of sorts by still remaining a super model even after mothering a child and being a busy doctor too. This is just a sample of the present generation moms!
The purpose of Mother's Day
"...To revive the dormant filial love and gratitude we owe to those who gave birth to us. To be a home tie for the absent; To obliterate family estrangement; To create a bond of brotherhood through the wearing of a floral badge; To make us better children by getting us closer to the hearts of our good mothers; To brighten the lives of good mothers; To have them know we appreciate them, though we do not show it as often as we ought... "
This was originally the purpose of Mother's Day. But I think the Moms of today, along with being the pillar of the family, deserve to be appreciated for the individuals they are. Let's salute them!
