 The most famous fresh fruit juice shop in Chennai, "Fruit Shop" on Greams
Road, does in fact sell fresh fruit, but is known primarily as a destination
for lovers of natural fruit juice. Natural juice - meaning without syrup or
colouring agents - ensures a flavour that offers infinite subtle variations.
Without artificial additives to even out the taste, season after season, no
one glass of juice tastes like the other. No wonder the shop has a large
number of regular customers, who visit as often as every morning and evening. The juices never taste the same, so each time it is a different
experience.
Fruit juice, milk shakes and cold desserts make up the menu. Fresh fruit
juices - all the family¹s favourites - orange, lemon, bitter lemonade,
pomegranate - cost from Rs.10 - Rs.60, with some special numbers like apple
cider, Spitfire (spicy orange) and lime-mint. Among the fresh fruit shakes
are familiars like banana split and unusual mixes with dates (Sheikh Shake),
custard apple and avocado, for Rs.20 - Rs.55. If one desires something more
than liquid refreshment there is custard, soufflé and fruit salad, or fun
foods; milk ices, ice lollies and ice cream. Something important for the hygiene-conscious -- all the drinks are made with mineral water.
 The shop has two branches, in Besant Nagar and Kilpauk, and they all display
the same simple good taste in interior decoration; bright but not flashy
colours, a little bamboo wainscot or trellis on the walls, an aquarium and
ample lighting. Also, a notice-board for customers who want to display their
wit and wisdom or leave messages.
Before I forget, there is an attractive rack of fruit too!. A visit to the
Fruit Shop might not make the average child scream in delight, but most
other people can relax here over a cold, tall glass and come out feeling
refreshed and eager to get on with the day or unwind at home. This writer
likes to drop in every time a cricket match does not go the way he hoped it
would. So perhaps the nicest thing I could say about the Fruit Shop is that
it makes people feel better!
