Lord Guru
 There
is a Tamil saying that Lord Guru's
look will fetch a lot of blessings from Him. Lord Guru is also called Brahaspathi
due to his excellence in education and fine arts.
Brahaspathi worshipped
in three temples in Tamil Nadu: Thenkudi Thittai,
Thiruvalidayam and Tiruchendur.
There is a temple
dedicated to Lord Guru at Alangudi,
which is near Needamangalam, in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu.
The
main deity of the Alangudi temple is Lord Abathsahayeswarar and
the Ambal's name is Ezhavaar Kuzhali. The Puranas say that Lord Guru
was born to Saint Angirasa and Vasuda. Lord Guru is considered supreme
in intelligence and so is the teacher of the Devas and a minister in Lord
Indra's court.
The
colour that is appropriate for Lord Guru is yellow. Donating a yellow
colour garment and chick pea (konda kadalai) is believed to bring happiness to a Guru
devotee. For students to excel in education, they should offer 'a konda
kadalai' garland (the chick pea should be soaked in water and made into
a garland once it swells up) to the Lord
every Thursday, the day dedicated to Him.
Thenkudi
Thittai is 9 km from Myladuthurai railway station. This temple has been
sung in the Thevaram by Nayanmars. The name of the Lord here is
Pasupathinathar and the Ambal is Ulaganayaki. It is also said Gauthamar,
Adiseshan, Kamadhenu
have worshipped and got the Lord's blessings here.
Thiruvalithayam, known
popular as Padi, near Chennai, is the second temple where Lord Guru
worshipped. The main deity's name is Lord Valithayanathar and the Ambal
is Thayammai. Saiva Nayanmar Tirugnanasambandar has sung in praise of
this temple. It
is believed that Lord Murugan sought the advice of Lord Guru before
fighting Soorapadman, about the history of Asuras. So, Lord Guru is
revered even in Tiruchendur.
