Navagraha Temples - III
Angaaragan
The
question whether life existed in planet Mars
once upon a time or whether it is possible to do so now is in the
process of being answered by scientists who are at present studying the
situation with the help of pictures or information sent by the Spirit
Rover.
But people of India
have been worshipping Mars
as God. They believe that worshipping 'Sevvai', i.e. Mars, gives
strength, oratory power to talk in a king's court and victory in war.
There are many places
where Angaaraga Bhagavan
(Sevvaai) has offered worship. Among these, the place that needs
special mention is Thirupullirukku
Veloor (Vaitheeswaran Kovil).
This
temple is situated between Mayiladuthurai and Chidambaram
and is the fourth railway station from Mayiladuthurai. This place was
once called Thirupullirukku Veloor according to old scriptures.
Pul - Sampaathi, Jatayu
birds Irukku - Vedam, Rig Veda Vel - Lord Muruga Oor - Puriyan
It is said Jatayu,
Sampaathi, the Rig Veda, Muruga and Suryan performed pooja and
worshipped the God here and that is the reason why it is called
Pullirukku Veloor.
The
Lord is called Sri Vaidhyanathar, The Ambal is Thaiyal
Nayaki. There is a reason for the Lord being called so. It is
believed that He can cure diseases which cannot be cured by medicines.
In the same way, the
Ambal here is called Thaiyal Nayaki because 'Thaiyal' means woman and 'Nayagi'
means head. As she is the chief or the leader of women both on Earth and
in Heaven, she is Thaiyal Nayaki.
Vaduganatha
Desikar has sung the sthalapurana of this temple. Apart from this, there
is a 'Kalapagam' sung by Padikasu Thambiran. Thevara Padigams have been
written about this sthala by Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar,
who have offered worship here.
Lord Muruga's temple
here is called Selvamuthu Kumaraswamy Temple and He is fondly called 'Muthiah'
by the devotees. The great poet Kumaragurupara Swamigal has written 'Muthukumaraswamy
Pillai Thamizh', a divine Thamizh
Prabandham, on this Lord. Those who read this book with sincere
devotion will attain the blessings of Lord Muruga.
The sthala vriksham
here is vembu. The sacred
pond is called 'Siddhamirdha Theertham'. It is believed that if one
takes a dip in this pond every Tuesday and worships lord Muruga, they
will achieve their goals and lead a peaceful life.
