Lost and won
Arulmighu Veezhinadhar Temple in Thiruveezhimizhalai is situated in Tiruvarur district and belongs to Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam. Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva by offering his eye to receive a chakra from Him in this sthala and it is said Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvathi, who had manifested as sage Kathiyayan's daughter and blessed by appearing as Kalyanasundarar in this
sthala.
Thirumal chakram
Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvathi was sitting in state in Thirukailayam and Lord Vishnu chose the occasion to worship them and made a representation. He informed them that his chakra was losing power and requested Lord Shiva to bless Him with a chakra which killed Jalandharan. Lord Shiva asked Lord Vishnu to go to Thejineevanam, which lay south of the Cauvery, and worship him.
Vishnu did so and created a pond called 'Vishnupadma theertham' with lotus flowers to worship Shiva. He bathed in the Arisil River and worshipped with thousand lotus flowers daily. One day, he found one flower less and realised that it was one of Shiva's miraculous deeds. He plucked his right eye and offered it at the Lord's feet. Shiva, happy at this gesture, appeared before Him and blessed Him with the
chakra.
Worship by Bhrama Deva
Lord Brahma once created a woman with great beauty, a woman with the finest features, called Thilothama. Having created her, He fell in love with her and desired her. But she was inaccessable to Him and disappeared whenever he tried to touch her. In the process, He lost his sense-organ and was afflicted with sin. He could neither create nor absolve Himself of the sin.
On Sage Agasthya's counsel, he went to Lord Shiva and requested Him to save Him. Shiva asked him to go to Thejineevanam and worship Him there, which would absolve Him of the sin. Brahma reached the sthala and worshipped Shiva. He created Brahma theertham and by worshipping Lord Shiva, He was saved and got back His power to create again.
Kathyayini's wedding
Sage Kathyayan with his wife came to this sacred place and worshipped Veezhinadhar and Maamullai Amman. For want of a progeny, he performed a yagna. The Goddess appeared before him and asked him for his wish. The sage wished that she would be born as his daughter. His request was granted and the sage named her as Kathyayini. When the time came for him to give her in marriage, he worshipped Lord Shiva who appeared with Vishnu, Brahma and took Her hand.
The temple
The sanctum sanctorum of the Lord and the Ambal face east and opposite the temple lies the Vishnupadma theertham pond. The surprising feature in this temple is the 'Thirukalyana Mandapam' called 'Wowvalathi Mandapam', which is supported not by pillars but by a broad structure built with slaked lime.
In the mahamandapam, one can see the idol of Lord Kalyanasundarar, who is also called as 'Mappillaiswami', who blesses the devotees by removing the obstacles that come in the way of their getting married. He is also worshipped for progeny.
Other names for the sacred place

sthala.
