The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially nominated its Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul, as their presidential candidate. This decision was made during a party meeting, where Fakhrul was chosen to represent the BNP in upcoming national elections.

Mirza Fakhrul, a prominent leader within the BNP, has been actively involved in politics for several years. Known for his strong leadership and political acumen, he is seen as a unifying figure within the party. His nomination reflects the party’s strategy to field a candidate who can appeal to a broad range of voters.

Fakhrul’s selection comes at a critical time for Bangladesh, with elections expected in the near future. The BNP aims to leverage his experience and reputation to challenge the current government and regain political influence. Many within the party believe that Fakhrul’s leadership qualities will help them secure votes across different regions of the country.

As the election campaign gains momentum, Fakhrul is expected to highlight key issues such as economic reforms, security, and good governance. His ability to connect with voters will be crucial in determining the BNP’s chances of success.

The nomination has been widely discussed in political circles, with both supporters and critics weighing in on its implications. Regardless of the outcome, this decision marks an important step for the BNP as it prepares to compete in what promises to be a highly competitive election.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kuril Islands for the first time, sparking protests from Japan. The islands are under Russian control but...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited the Kuril Islands, an area that has been at the center of a long-running territorial dispute between Russia and Japan. His visit to Iturup Island has led to strong protests from the Japanese government.

The Kuril Islands are controlled by Russia, but Japan claims four of the southern islands. Japan calls these islands the “Northern Territories,” while Russia considers them part of its territory.

During his visit, Putin toured several important locations on Iturup Island. He visited a fish-processing plant, a hospital and a school. He also spoke with local residents and met Valery Limarenko, the governor of Russia’s Sakhalin Region.

Putin’s visit is significant because it sends a strong message that Russia considers the islands an important part of its territory. The Russian government has continued to develop the islands and strengthen its presence there.

Japan strongly objects to Russian control of the four southern islands. The dispute dates back to the final days of World War II, when Soviet forces took control of the islands after Japan’s defeat.

The territorial disagreement has continued for decades. It has also prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal peace treaty to officially end the state of war left over from World War II.

Both countries have made efforts to find a solution through diplomatic talks. However, those discussions have failed to produce a final agreement on the islands.

In recent years, Russia has increased its military presence in the Kuril Islands. Moscow has strengthened military facilities and deployed equipment in the region. The increased Russian activity has caused further concern in Japan.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi criticized Putin’s visit to Iturup, which Japan calls Etorofu. Japanese officials have repeatedly stated that the four southern islands are part of Japan and that the country will continue to defend its territorial position.

This is not the first time Japan has protested a visit by a senior Russian official to the disputed islands. In 2021, Japan also objected when then-Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin visited Iturup.

The territorial dispute has also affected relations between the two countries in other areas. Russia and Japan have faced difficulties in improving their political relationship, partly because of disagreements over the islands.

For Russia, maintaining control over the Kuril Islands is important for both political and strategic reasons. The islands are located in an important part of the Pacific region and have military and economic value.

For Japan, the issue remains an important matter of national sovereignty and historical importance. Japanese governments have continued to raise the territorial claim during discussions with Russia.

Putin’s latest visit shows that the dispute remains unresolved. Despite years of negotiations and diplomatic efforts, neither side has been willing to give up its position on the islands.

The latest development is likely to add further tension to Russia-Japan relations. It also shows how a territorial dispute that began after World War II continues to influence relations between the two countries many decades later.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently visited the Kuril Islands, a chain in the Pacific Ocean controlled by Russia but claimed by Japan. His visit has angered Japanese officials, who consider these islands part of their territory.

During his trip, Putin inspected a fish processing plant, a hospital, and a school on Iturup Island. He also met local residents and the governor of Russia’s Sakhalin region.

The Kuril Islands have been a point of contention between Russia and Japan since the Soviet Union took control of four southern islands in 1945 near the end of World War II. Despite decades of diplomatic efforts, no resolution has been reached, and no formal peace treaty exists between the two countries.

Japan protested similarly when Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin visited Iturup in 2021. Putin’s recent visit to the region included stops in Siberia and the Far East, where he attended naval exercises with Russia’s Pacific Fleet.

Putin emphasized that while the Kuril Islands’ status is recognized internationally, Russia remains open to discussing a peace treaty with Japan. He acknowledged past cooperation with Japanese leaders but noted changes in Japan’s stance since imposing sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.

Despite ongoing tensions, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s willingness to work with neighboring countries, including Japan, for mutual benefit.

Britain is facing its fifth heat wave this year, with temperatures expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius (100.4°F). The extreme weather has caught many off guard, leaving the country unprepared to handle such high temperatures.

The sweltering conditions have caused disruptions across the nation. Rail tracks are expanding due to the heat, causing delays and cancellations in train services. Roads have also softened in places, leading to potential hazards for drivers. Hospitals are reporting a rise in heat-related illnesses, with vulnerable groups like the elderly and young children being particularly at risk.

Local authorities have been urged to take extra precautions, such as setting up cooling centers for those without access to air conditioning. Schools and businesses are closing early or adjusting schedules to avoid the midday heat. Despite these measures, many residents are struggling to cope with the intense conditions.

The government has issued warnings about water shortages in some areas, as demand for drinking water and garden sprinklers spikes. People are being advised to stay hydrated, limit physical activity during peak hours, and check on neighbors who may be isolated or at risk.

While officials work to manage the situation, they acknowledge that the country’s infrastructure is not fully prepared for such frequent and severe heat waves. Experts warn that this trend is likely to continue as global temperatures rise due to climate change.

For now, residents are urged to stay informed, take necessary precautions, and hope for cooler weather in the coming weeks.

Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has arrived in New Delhi for a two-day official visit to India. The visit is aimed at strengthening the friendly relationship between India and Liberia and creating new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

During her visit, Nyanti is scheduled to meet India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The meeting is expected to focus on important areas of mutual interest and ways to further improve relations between India and Liberia.

India and Liberia have maintained friendly diplomatic relations for several years. Both countries have worked together in areas such as education, healthcare, development, trade and capacity building.

The visit by Liberia’s Foreign Minister is seen as an opportunity to review the progress made in these areas and discuss new possibilities for cooperation. India has been involved in several development and training programs that support countries across Africa, including Liberia.

The External Affairs Ministry announced Nyanti’s visit through social media and highlighted the importance of strengthening the partnership between the two nations. Although the visit is only for two days, officials believe it can help build closer political and economic ties.

India has been increasing its engagement with African countries through development partnerships, training programs and cooperation in areas such as technology, agriculture and healthcare. Liberia is also interested in expanding international partnerships to support its economic and social development.

The meeting between Nyanti and Jaishankar is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on regional and global issues. They may also discuss ways to improve cooperation in areas that can directly benefit people in both countries.

People-to-people connections are another important part of India-Liberia relations. Education and professional training have helped strengthen links between the two countries, with Liberian students and professionals benefiting from opportunities in India.

Nyanti’s visit also reflects Liberia’s interest in maintaining strong relations with India. Regular high-level meetings can help both countries understand each other’s priorities and work together on shared goals.

The two-day visit is therefore expected to further strengthen the existing friendship between India and Liberia. It may also open the door for greater cooperation in trade, development, education, healthcare and other important sectors in the future.

Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for over two decades before fleeing during a civil war in 2024, has been sentenced to death along with his brother Ma...

Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for more than two decades, has reportedly been sentenced to death along with his brother Maher al-Assad and several others. The case is linked to serious crimes and human rights abuses that allegedly took place during the Assad family’s rule.

The court proceedings against Assad and his associates began in April. They faced charges connected to violence during the government’s response to anti-government protests in 2011. The unrest began in the city of Daraa after several teenagers were reportedly arrested for writing anti-government messages on a wall.

The arrests led to public anger and protests. The demonstrations later spread to other parts of Syria and developed into a much larger conflict. The government’s response included arrests, violence and military action against protesters and opposition groups.

During the court proceedings, witnesses reportedly described serious abuse. They spoke about people being beaten, tortured and subjected to electric shocks while in detention. The allegations are among the serious crimes that formed part of the case against Assad and other members of his former government.

Maher al-Assad, Bashar al-Assad’s younger brother, was also accused of playing an important role in the government’s military response to the uprising. Other individuals were included in the case because of their alleged involvement in crimes committed during the conflict.

Although the court has issued death sentences, putting them into effect could be extremely difficult. Bashar al-Assad and Maher al-Assad are believed to be living in Russia under asylum. This means that Syrian authorities would face major difficulties in bringing them back to Syria to carry out the sentences.

Russia has been a long-time supporter of the Assad government. During the Syrian conflict, Moscow provided important military and political support to Damascus. This relationship could make any attempt to extradite the former president and his brother particularly complicated.

The legal case has also attracted criticism from international human rights organizations. Some groups have raised concerns about trials conducted without the accused being physically present in court. They argue that defendants should have a full opportunity to defend themselves in person.

Syrian authorities, however, maintain that the legal process follows the country’s laws. Officials say the court is attempting to hold people responsible for serious crimes committed during the former regime.

The case is significant because it represents an attempt to address some of the alleged abuses committed during Syria’s long conflict. The Syrian civil war caused widespread destruction, displaced millions of people and resulted in a large number of deaths.

The death sentences therefore carry both legal and political importance. While the verdicts may be seen as an effort to provide accountability for victims, the absence of the accused from Syria makes their enforcement uncertain.

The case also shows the continuing challenges facing Syria as it deals with the legacy of years of conflict. Questions about justice, accountability and the treatment of victims remain important as the country moves forward.

For many victims and their families, the court proceedings are an important step toward recognition of the suffering they experienced. However, the final outcome will depend not only on the court’s decisions but also on whether the accused can ever be brought back to Syria.

A 17-year-old boy of Indian origin has been charged with murdering his mother and younger brother in their home in Acton, Massachusetts. The teen, identified as Arjun Aravind, faces two counts of murder, among other charges, including battery and theft, related to the deaths.

According to officials, Arjun allegedly attacked his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his brother Siddharth Aravind, 14, inside their home on August 11, 2026. After the killings, he fled the scene in his mother’s car. Authorities received a call from Arjun’s father later that evening when he couldn’t contact his family.

When police arrived at the home, they found both victims dead with serious injuries. Arjun was nowhere to be found until early the next morning, when he was spotted in a parked car in Wayland, Massachusetts. He was taken into custody without resistance.

A statement from authorities mentioned that Arjun had shown concerning behavior, including using the internet and AI tools like ChatGPT to search for ideas about harming his family.

Arjun is expected to appear in juvenile court but may face trial as an adult for the murder charges.

A shooting at Warner Robins High School in Georgia left a ninth-grade student seriously injured. The incident happened only about a week after the new school year began and involved two ninth-grade students.

The shooting took place at around 2:15 p.m. inside a school bathroom. According to Sheriff Matt Moulton, the incident began with a fight between two students. The situation quickly became violent, and one student was shot.

After the shooting, the teenage suspect ran away from the school. Police officers and other law enforcement agencies from nearby areas immediately responded to the school. The school is located about 100 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The injured student suffered serious injuries, but officials said the injuries were not life-threatening. A school officer quickly provided first aid and used tourniquets to help control the student’s bleeding before emergency medical workers arrived. The student was then taken to a hospital for further treatment.

Police continued searching for the suspect after the shooting. About an hour later, officers located the teenage suspect near the school and arrested him. Authorities said there were no further incidents during the arrest.

Sheriff Moulton praised the school’s safety procedures and said the school’s emergency plan was followed correctly. He said the quick response by school staff and law enforcement helped prevent the situation from becoming even more serious.

The shooting has caused concern among students, parents, teachers, and staff, especially because it happened so early in the new school year. School officials are now focusing on supporting students and employees affected by the incident.

Warner Robins High School will remain closed to students and staff on Thursday and Friday. Counselors will be available to help students and staff deal with the emotional impact of the shooting.

Superintendent Richard Rogers said the school community’s main priority is healing and supporting everyone affected. Officials are also expected to review the incident and continue working to keep students and staff safe when the school reopens.

The incident has once again raised concerns about safety in schools and the importance of having strong emergency plans in place. Authorities said the investigation into the shooting is continuing.

Morocco has increased security at its borders with Spain in Ceuta and Melilla following online calls for mass crossings into these Spanish cities. The...

Morocco has increased security along its borders with Spain after messages on social media called for large groups of migrants to cross into the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

The online calls have created concerns that another major migration attempt could happen soon. Authorities are especially worried about a possible gathering at the Ceuta border on August 15. However, officials have not confirmed who started the messages or whether the planned crossing is actually being organized.

Spain’s Civil Guard has confirmed that the border remains closed. Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles has also warned migrants against attempting another mass entry into Ceuta or Melilla. Spanish authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are working with Moroccan security forces to prevent a repeat of the earlier incident.

The latest concerns come after a major migration surge in late July. Around 72,000 migrants reportedly crossed into Ceuta after false information spread that the border had been opened. Many migrants were also motivated by difficult economic conditions and hopes of finding better opportunities in Europe.

Most of the migrants who entered Ceuta were later returned to Morocco. However, the incident created serious political and humanitarian concerns in Spain and other parts of Europe. At least 80 people reportedly died during the crossing attempt, while human rights organizations have said the actual number of deaths may have been higher.

Ceuta is one of two Spanish cities located in North Africa. The other is Melilla. Both cities share land borders with Morocco and are important entry points between Africa and the European Union.

Following the July incident, Morocco has increased the number of security personnel near both borders. The Moroccan Interior Ministry said that all necessary measures had been taken to stop further illegal crossings.

Security forces have increased patrols and monitoring around Ceuta and Melilla. Videos posted on social media reportedly show large numbers of police officers wearing riot-control equipment near the border. Water cannons, ambulances and other equipment have also been positioned in the area.

A senior Moroccan diplomat said that more than 20,000 security personnel are deployed every day along the Ceuta border. Maintaining such a large security operation is expensive and costs Morocco millions. The large deployment shows how seriously authorities are treating the possibility of another mass crossing.

Moroccan officials have also taken action against people suspected of encouraging illegal migration through social media. The Interior Ministry said that several individuals had been arrested in connection with online messages encouraging people to attempt crossings. Officials have not provided further details about the arrests.

Spanish authorities have also issued strong warnings. Defense Minister Margarita Robles said that Ceuta and Melilla are part of Spain and that any attempt to attack or force entry into these territories would be treated very seriously. She stressed that the events of July must not happen again.

Spain’s Civil Guard has shared warnings in French and Spanish to reach people who may be considering crossing the border. The messages explain that the border is still closed and that additional barriers have been built following the previous breach.

Authorities are also warning migrants not to believe false information on social media claiming that the border has been opened. Officials fear that such rumors could encourage thousands of people to travel to the border areas.

As August 15 approaches, Moroccan and Spanish authorities are expected to keep security forces on high alert. Both countries are closely watching social media activity and developments near Ceuta and Melilla.

The situation highlights the continuing migration pressure along Spain’s North African borders. Economic difficulties, misinformation and hopes of reaching Europe continue to influence migration attempts, while Spain and Morocco are increasing security to prevent dangerous mass crossings.
