NASA is making final preparations for one of its most important space missions in decades. The mission, called Artemis 2, is expected to launch on April 1 if everything goes as planned.

This mission will send astronauts on a journey around the Moon. It will be the first time in more than 50 years that humans travel beyond low Earth orbit. The last such mission was Apollo 17 in 1972.

NASA says Artemis 2 is an important step in its long-term plan to return humans to the Moon and prepare for future missions to Mars. The mission will test new spacecraft systems and check how well astronauts can live and work in deep space conditions.

The crew will travel in NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which will be carried into space by the powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. During the mission, astronauts will circle the Moon and then return safely to Earth.

Scientists and engineers are carefully checking all systems before launch to make sure the mission is safe. Even small technical issues are being reviewed as part of final safety checks.

NASA officials say this mission is not just about going to the Moon again, but also about preparing for the future of human space exploration. They believe Artemis 2 will mark a new chapter in space history and bring humans one step closer to deeper space travel.

NASA has announced important progress for its upcoming Artemis II mission, which is scheduled to launch on April 1, 2026.

NASA has announced important progress for its upcoming Artemis II mission, which is scheduled to launch on April 1, 2026. Early on March 20, the complete Artemis II vehicle, including the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion, was successfully rolled out to the launch pad.

This milestone came after NASA completed important repairs to the helium check valves inside the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS), which is responsible for powering Orion into its correct orbit. Ensuring these valves work properly is crucial for the safety and success of the mission.

NASA has also confirmed the official crew for Artemis II. The astronauts assigned to the mission include Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover, along with other team members who will travel on the Orion spacecraft. This mission will be the first crewed flight in NASA’s Artemis program after Artemis I, which was an uncrewed test flight around the Moon.

Artemis II is designed to orbit the Moon and safely return the astronauts to Earth, marking a major step toward NASA’s long-term goal of establishing sustainable human exploration of the Moon and preparing for future missions to Mars. The rollout and valve repairs show that NASA is making steady progress toward a safe and successful launch.

This mission is highly anticipated and represents another milestone in the Artemis program, which aims to advance human space exploration and develop technologies for deep-space travel. Fans and space enthusiasts around the world are watching closely as NASA prepares for liftoff.

Cacti are often seen as slow-growing plants that survive in harsh desert conditions, but new research shows that they may actually be some of the fastest-evolving plants on Earth. This challenges the old belief that cacti change very slowly over time.

Scientists from the University of Reading carried out a study, published in Biology Letters, to investigate how cacti form new species. They discovered that cacti are able to develop new species quickly, but not because of the size of their flowers or the type of pollinators that visit them.

The real reason behind their rapid evolution is how quickly the shape of their flowers changes over time. Even small changes in flower shape can help cacti adapt to their surroundings. This ability to adapt allows them to survive and thrive in very different environments, including deserts where water and nutrients are scarce.

The study reveals that cacti are more flexible and dynamic than scientists previously thought. Their rapid evolution explains why there are so many different species of cacti today. It also gives new insights into how plants, even in extreme conditions, can change and adapt faster than expected.

This research changes the way scientists understand plant evolution. Instead of being seen only as slow-growing desert survivors, cacti are now recognized as fast-evolving plants. Their ability to quickly adapt and form new species shows how life can thrive even in some of the toughest environments on Earth.

With this discovery, researchers are excited to study other plants in deserts and extreme habitats, as it may reveal more examples of rapid evolution that were previously overlooked. Cacti are proving that even plants we think of as slow and steady can be surprisingly quick to evolve.

start with the main question, explain what GLP-1 drugs are, discuss how pills work, compare their effectiveness to injectables, mention manufacturing challenges, and conclude with expert insights on their role alongside injections.

I need to ensure each paragraph is concise and avoids jargon. Maybe break down technical terms into simpler explanations. For example, instead of “bioavailability,” say “how much of the drug actually gets into the bloodstream.”

Let me also make sure I include all key points: approval status of the pills, dosage differences, how injections work versus pills, and future developments in oral medications.

Finally, wrap it up by emphasizing that while pills are a good option, they don’t replace injectables yet but offer another choice for people.

TITLE: Pills vs. Injections for Weight Loss
CONTENT: For years, weight-loss drugs like Wegovy required weekly injections, which can be intimidating for some people. However, recent advancements have led to the development of oral weight-loss pills, offering a new option for those seeking alternatives to needles.

Experts predict that an oral drug called orforglipron could receive US approval by late April, joining another pill form of semaglutide (sold as Wegovy) that was recently approved in December. Both drugs belong to a group of treatments known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 to help regulate appetite and promote weight loss.

Clinical trials show promising results: people taking orforglipron lost about 11% of their body weight after one year, while those on semaglutide pills lost nearly 14%. However, these pills are not yet ready to fully replace injectable options like Zepbound, which can lead to up to 21% weight loss.

The reason injectables have been the go-to option is that GLP-1 receptor agonists are made of peptides—large molecules that the body breaks down quickly if taken orally. To overcome this, these drugs are packaged in small injection pens with tiny needles, allowing them to bypass the digestive system and enter the bloodstream directly.

Developing oral versions has been challenging. For example, semaglutide pills have only about 1–2% bioavailability, meaning very little of the drug actually reaches the bloodstream compared to injections. This requires higher doses in pill form, which limits how many doses can be produced.

While these new pills are a step forward, they are not yet a replacement for injectables. Experts like Daniel Drucker, an endocrinologist at the University of Toronto, see them as complementary options rather than replacements. For now, injections remain more effective for significant weight loss, but oral drugs offer a convenient and less intimidating alternative for some patients.

Platypuses have surprised scientists by exhibiting a unique feature previously found only in bird feathers. These unusual mammals, known for laying eggs, sensing electricity with their bills, and even fluorescing under UV light, now add another intriguing trait to their list.

Researchers discovered that platypus hair contains tiny pigment-filled structures called melanosomes, which are hollow—a characteristic typically associated with bird feathers rather than mammalian hair. This finding was made by biologist Jessica Dobson during her research at Ghent University in Belgium. Initially comparing melanosomes across various mammals, she noticed the distinct structure in platypuses, prompting further investigation.

Using an electron microscope, Dobson examined these structures in 12 platypuses and found no evidence of hollow melanosomes in their closest relatives, echidnas or marsupials. This suggests that the trait is unique to platypuses among mammals.

Additionally, the study revealed that while the melanosomes are round and hollow, the melanin pigments within them resemble those typically found in elongated melanosomes, resulting in darker colors like brown and black. This combination of shape and pigment is unique, even among birds, which have rod-shaped hollow melanosomes.

This discovery highlights the evolutionary uniqueness of platypuses and raises questions about how such a trait arose independently in mammals and birds. It underscores the diverse ways evolution can lead to similar features across different species, offering insights into the adaptive history of these animals.

Future research may explore whether other unique animals possess this trait or if it is exclusive to platypuses, continuing to unravel the mysteries of evolutionary biology.

Neuroscientists are debating a long-held belief about dopamine, often called the “feel-good” chemical. For years, researchers thought dopamine mainly linked stimuli to rewards, like getting pleasure from drugs or social media scrolling. But recent studies suggest this view is too simplistic.

Dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps cells communicate, plays a far more complex role in the brain. While it does contribute to feelings of reward and pleasure, it also influences learning, memory, attention, and even social behaviors. For example, some dopamine neurons respond to new stimuli or threats, not just rewards.

The classic “reward prediction error” (RPE) hypothesis dominated neuroscience for decades. It suggested that dopamine signals helped the brain predict rewards based on cues. However, this model is now being challenged. New research shows dopamine may also signal predictions about threats, aversive experiences, and novel stimuli—beyond just rewards.

One alternative idea comes from Vijay Namboodiri’s “adjusted net contingency for causal relations” (ANCCR) model, which suggests animals learn by looking backward after receiving a reward to find the cause. This goes against the traditional RPE idea that cues predict rewards.

These findings have big implications for understanding conditions like ADHD and addiction. If dopamine’s role is more complex than once thought, treatments based on outdated models might need revising. Neuroscientists are now asking if they should tweak existing theories or develop entirely new ones to explain dopamine’s many roles.

As debates continue at conferences like the Dopamine Society meeting in Seville, Spain, researchers aim to uncover a more complete picture of this essential brain chemical—one that goes far beyond the “feel-good” label.

China is doubling down on its goal to become a world leader in advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum tech. The country’s 15th Five-Year Plan (FYP), passed in late March, outlines ambitious goals for the next five years, from 2026 to 2030. This plan reflects China’s growing confidence in its ability to lead global innovation.

In recent years, China has shifted from catching up with other nations to aiming for true leadership in tech. The FYP emphasizes overcoming technological barriers that currently limit China’s progress in key areas like semiconductor chips and advanced materials. To achieve this, the government is increasing funding for research and development (R&D), with plans to boost R&D spending further over the next five years.

The plan focuses on six critical sectors: integrated circuits, industrial machine tools, high-end instruments, basic software, advanced materials, and biomanufacturing. The goal is to build self-sufficiency in these fields by strengthening domestic capabilities across the entire supply chain. This push is partly driven by competition with the U.S. for global tech dominance.

China also plans to invest heavily in emerging technologies like AI, quantum computing, and biotechnology. AI, in particular, is seen as a cornerstone of China’s future innovation strategy. The government aims to integrate AI into various sectors, from industry to governance, as part of its “AI Plus” initiative.

To attract top talent, China has introduced measures like the “K visa,” which targets foreign scientists. These efforts highlight China’s determination to compete on the global stage. Already, Chinese tech companies are making strides in AI, with some startups releasing advanced language models that rival those from U.S. tech giants but at a lower cost.

Experts believe China’s growing confidence in its technological capabilities will position it as a key player in shaping global AI governance and regulations. As the country continues to prioritize innovation, its focus on overcoming technological challenges and fostering domestic expertise will likely drive significant advancements in the years ahead.

Living in northern Vermont, I’ve noticed a significant change in Lake Champlain’s freeze patterns over the past century. Until the 1940s, the lake froze every year between October and April. However, in recent years, it has only frozen once or twice a decade. This shift is a small but telling sign of climate change.

One reason why we fail to notice these subtle changes is that our brains are wired to recognize patterns better when they’re presented in black and white – i.e., binary data. For instance, showing people whether the lake froze or not in a given year is more effective than presenting continuous temperature increases over time. This finding was confirmed by machine learning expert Grace Liu and her colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University.

Noticing the signs of climate change is just the first step towards taking action. The real challenge lies in translating this awareness into meaningful changes. New England, including Burlington, Vermont, is one of the fastest-warming regions globally. As a result, Lake Champlain has transitioned from freezing almost every year to freezing only occasionally. This trend might seem minor, but it underscores the urgent need for us to address climate change.

The rise in average temperature over time can be misleading, hiding the actual changes happening on our planet. We must learn to recognize and respond to these subtle signs of climate change if we hope to mitigate its effects.

Scientists have discovered that the way young fish behave can predict how long they will live. This is according to a new study that tracked the daily activities of African turquoise killifish from their teenage years until death. The researchers found that youthful fish that were more active and energetic, spending most of their time moving around, tended to live longer than those who were less active.

The study also showed that young fish that went to bed earlier in the evening and slept more at night lived longer than those who took naps during the day. This is significant because it suggests that early adulthood behavior can predict future lifespan, even before signs of disease emerge.

According to neuroscientist Agustín Ibáñez from Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile, “This opens several exciting possibilities.” The study’s findings highlight the importance of behavior as a window into an animal’s internal state. By tracking every movement over an animal’s lifespan, scientists can gain valuable insights into how aging unfolds.

The researchers used cameras to capture the daily activities of 81 killifish for 24 hours a day and built a machine-learning model to identify patterns in their behavioral characteristics, such as speed, rest, and movement. At around 100 days old, young fish that would eventually live longer were found to be more active, vigorous, and faster-moving than those that would go on to have shorter lifespans.

This study provides new insights into the complex process of aging and lifespan in animals. By understanding how youthful behavior predicts lifespan, scientists may be able to develop ways to promote healthy aging and extend lifespan in the future.
