A century ago, Hugo Gernsback invented a wooden helmet to block distractions, highlighting the timeless challenge of maintaining focus. Today, with smartphones, multiple tabs, and constant notifications, concerns about shrinking attention spans are growing.

Despite these worries, scientific research offers a more complex picture. While people do switch tasks more often, there’s no clear evidence that our ability to concentrate has declined. Laboratory studies show sustained attention remains steady when distractions are minimized.

However, real-world data reveals a different story. Workers now focus on single tasks for shorter periods, moving between activities more frequently. This habit may lead to mental fatigue and reduced efficiency, even if it doesn’t impair core concentration skills.

Experts debate whether these habits could reshape our brains over time. Some suggest frequent task-switching might weaken executive control—the brain’s ability to manage attention—though evidence remains limited.

Ultimately, while modern distractions are significant, the jury is still out on whether they’ve fundamentally altered our capacity to focus.

As solar activity increases during its peak cycle, space debris orbiting Earth is falling back to the planet more quickly, according to new research. When sunspots on the Sun’s surface reach high numbers, objects in low Earth orbit lose altitude faster than usual.

A study published in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences found that when sunspot numbers reached about 70% of their peak levels, space debris experienced a sharp increase in orbital decay. This means they drop toward Earth more rapidly due to added atmospheric drag caused by solar heating.

The Sun’s radiation fluctuates over an 11-year cycle. At its peak, increased solar activity heats and expands the thermosphere—a layer of atmosphere above Earth. When this happens, space debris in low Earth orbit (which spans about 160 to 2,000 kilometers above Earth) encounters more atmospheric resistance. This added friction slows down the debris, causing it to fall back to Earth sooner.

Researchers tracked 17 pieces of space junk for over three decades and observed how their orbits changed during three solar cycles. Each time solar activity peaked, the debris experienced a noticeable drop in altitude before stabilizing until the next cycle began.

This finding is important for managing space operations as humanity faces growing challenges from orbital debris colliding with satellites and spacecraft. Understanding how solar activity affects space junk could help improve predictions and planning for future missions.

The growing role of AI in generating scientific literature is raising concerns. Recent studies explore how much of this content is created by AI, revealing a fast-changing landscape that’s hard to fully understand.

Many researchers fear that poor-quality or fake studies made by large language models (LLMs) could flood current systems meant to check for errors. This could harm the trustworthiness of science.

Richard She, a scientist in Singapore, warns it’s an “escalating arms race” between those abusing AI and those trying to stop it. Maria Antoniak, a computer scientist, says the situation is evolving so quickly that experts are unprepared.

In March, an analysis found AI-generated articles likely outnumbered human-written ones online. While AI can help speed up research, it also poses risks like creating fake or low-quality papers.

To tackle this, researchers use tools to detect AI-generated text. However, these tools aren’t perfect—some can’t tell the difference between text edited by AI and fully generated content. They also define “AI-generated” differently, sometimes wrongly flagging human-written work as AI-made.

A study using detection tools on 7,000 journal submissions found a 42% increase in AI-generated content since November 2022. By early 2026, over 30% of peer-review reports were also found to contain AI text.

Other researchers, like She and Antoniak, are trying to track AI-generated papers online. Their efforts are tough due to the massive number of papers published. For example, She analyzed biomedical papers in top journals and found that about 12.5% contained some AI-generated text.

Antoniak’s research on arXiv preprints showed a sharp rise in AI-generated content between 2023 and 2025, especially in computer science.

Experts predict this trend will continue, signaling the start of a new era where AI plays a bigger role in scientific publishing.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently discussed expanding access to testosterone therapy for people with various health issues. Some experts call it a key part of preventive healthcare, worth billions of dollars.

Currently, testosterone is available in the U.S. for those with low levels due to medical reasons, like testicular damage. However, growing evidence suggests more men and women might benefit from it, including through injections, patches, implants, or gels.

The debate over who should use testosterone therapy is heating up. Some doctors say most men with low testosterone, especially young ones without medical issues, don’t need treatment and could improve their levels through healthier lifestyles. Others believe men with symptoms like low libido, fatigue, and irritability could benefit from the hormone.

Some experts go further, suggesting all cisgender men should be tested for testosterone levels and treated if they’re low, even without symptoms. Abraham Morgentaler, a urologist at Harvard Medical School, argues that normal testosterone levels are crucial for overall health.

Despite these claims, testosterone is increasingly marketed as a lifestyle drug to boost muscle and energy, popularized by podcasters like Joe Rogan. However, high doses can lead to risks like infertility, heart problems, and even increased mortality.

Historically, testosterone therapy was popular but fell out of favor due to fears it could cause cancer. Those fears came from studies showing prostate cancer shrinkage when testosterone levels were lowered. These concerns have since been partially addressed, though debates continue.

Recent studies show that while testosterone can improve sexual function and energy in some, its benefits may be modest. For example, a large trial found no increased risk of heart attacks or strokes in men with low testosterone who used the hormone.

However, high doses of testosterone can cause serious side effects, including heart issues and infertility. Smaller trials suggest it may increase muscle mass and strength but doesn’t significantly improve mood or energy levels.

Testosterone therapy is also being discussed for women and transgender individuals, though they’re often excluded from major studies. More research is needed to fully understand its benefits and risks for all groups.

Scientists have discovered that a volcano in Greece, believed to have been inactive for more than 100,000 years, may not have been truly extinct after all.

The study focused on Methana, a volcano located near Athens. Although the volcano appeared silent for a very long time, researchers found evidence that volcanic activity was still continuing deep underground.

Scientists made this discovery by studying tiny crystals called zircon, which form inside underground magma chambers. These crystals can preserve important information about volcanic history over hundreds of thousands of years.

By analyzing rock samples from Methana, researchers created a detailed timeline covering around 700,000 years of the volcano’s activity.

The findings revealed that even during long periods without eruptions, magma continued to develop beneath the surface. This suggests that some volcanoes considered extinct or dormant may still have hidden underground activity.

Traditionally, smaller volcanoes are often labeled extinct if they have not erupted for at least 10,000 years. However, this research challenges that assumption by showing that long quiet periods do not always mean a volcano is completely inactive.

Researchers believe that water trapped within the magma may have played a role in delaying eruptions. Deep underground pressure keeps water dissolved in the magma, but as magma rises closer to the surface, pressure decreases, causing water to form bubbles. This process may slow or temporarily pause eruptions.

The study highlights that volcanoes can remain active beneath the surface even when they appear dormant, offering important new insights into volcanic behavior and future eruption risks.

NASA is making final preparations for one of its most important space missions in decades. The mission, called Artemis 2, is expected to launch on April 1 if everything goes as planned.

This mission will send astronauts on a journey around the Moon. It will be the first time in more than 50 years that humans travel beyond low Earth orbit. The last such mission was Apollo 17 in 1972.

NASA says Artemis 2 is an important step in its long-term plan to return humans to the Moon and prepare for future missions to Mars. The mission will test new spacecraft systems and check how well astronauts can live and work in deep space conditions.

The crew will travel in NASA’s Orion spacecraft, which will be carried into space by the powerful Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. During the mission, astronauts will circle the Moon and then return safely to Earth.

Scientists and engineers are carefully checking all systems before launch to make sure the mission is safe. Even small technical issues are being reviewed as part of final safety checks.

NASA officials say this mission is not just about going to the Moon again, but also about preparing for the future of human space exploration. They believe Artemis 2 will mark a new chapter in space history and bring humans one step closer to deeper space travel.

NASA has announced important progress for its upcoming Artemis II mission, which is scheduled to launch on April 1, 2026.

NASA has announced important progress for its upcoming Artemis II mission, which is scheduled to launch on April 1, 2026. Early on March 20, the complete Artemis II vehicle, including the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion, was successfully rolled out to the launch pad.

This milestone came after NASA completed important repairs to the helium check valves inside the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS), which is responsible for powering Orion into its correct orbit. Ensuring these valves work properly is crucial for the safety and success of the mission.

NASA has also confirmed the official crew for Artemis II. The astronauts assigned to the mission include Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover, along with other team members who will travel on the Orion spacecraft. This mission will be the first crewed flight in NASA’s Artemis program after Artemis I, which was an uncrewed test flight around the Moon.

Artemis II is designed to orbit the Moon and safely return the astronauts to Earth, marking a major step toward NASA’s long-term goal of establishing sustainable human exploration of the Moon and preparing for future missions to Mars. The rollout and valve repairs show that NASA is making steady progress toward a safe and successful launch.

This mission is highly anticipated and represents another milestone in the Artemis program, which aims to advance human space exploration and develop technologies for deep-space travel. Fans and space enthusiasts around the world are watching closely as NASA prepares for liftoff.

Cacti are often seen as slow-growing plants that survive in harsh desert conditions, but new research shows that they may actually be some of the fastest-evolving plants on Earth. This challenges the old belief that cacti change very slowly over time.

Scientists from the University of Reading carried out a study, published in Biology Letters, to investigate how cacti form new species. They discovered that cacti are able to develop new species quickly, but not because of the size of their flowers or the type of pollinators that visit them.

The real reason behind their rapid evolution is how quickly the shape of their flowers changes over time. Even small changes in flower shape can help cacti adapt to their surroundings. This ability to adapt allows them to survive and thrive in very different environments, including deserts where water and nutrients are scarce.

The study reveals that cacti are more flexible and dynamic than scientists previously thought. Their rapid evolution explains why there are so many different species of cacti today. It also gives new insights into how plants, even in extreme conditions, can change and adapt faster than expected.

This research changes the way scientists understand plant evolution. Instead of being seen only as slow-growing desert survivors, cacti are now recognized as fast-evolving plants. Their ability to quickly adapt and form new species shows how life can thrive even in some of the toughest environments on Earth.

With this discovery, researchers are excited to study other plants in deserts and extreme habitats, as it may reveal more examples of rapid evolution that were previously overlooked. Cacti are proving that even plants we think of as slow and steady can be surprisingly quick to evolve.

start with the main question, explain what GLP-1 drugs are, discuss how pills work, compare their effectiveness to injectables, mention manufacturing challenges, and conclude with expert insights on their role alongside injections.

I need to ensure each paragraph is concise and avoids jargon. Maybe break down technical terms into simpler explanations. For example, instead of “bioavailability,” say “how much of the drug actually gets into the bloodstream.”

Let me also make sure I include all key points: approval status of the pills, dosage differences, how injections work versus pills, and future developments in oral medications.

Finally, wrap it up by emphasizing that while pills are a good option, they don’t replace injectables yet but offer another choice for people.

TITLE: Pills vs. Injections for Weight Loss
CONTENT: For years, weight-loss drugs like Wegovy required weekly injections, which can be intimidating for some people. However, recent advancements have led to the development of oral weight-loss pills, offering a new option for those seeking alternatives to needles.

Experts predict that an oral drug called orforglipron could receive US approval by late April, joining another pill form of semaglutide (sold as Wegovy) that was recently approved in December. Both drugs belong to a group of treatments known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 to help regulate appetite and promote weight loss.

Clinical trials show promising results: people taking orforglipron lost about 11% of their body weight after one year, while those on semaglutide pills lost nearly 14%. However, these pills are not yet ready to fully replace injectable options like Zepbound, which can lead to up to 21% weight loss.

The reason injectables have been the go-to option is that GLP-1 receptor agonists are made of peptides—large molecules that the body breaks down quickly if taken orally. To overcome this, these drugs are packaged in small injection pens with tiny needles, allowing them to bypass the digestive system and enter the bloodstream directly.

Developing oral versions has been challenging. For example, semaglutide pills have only about 1–2% bioavailability, meaning very little of the drug actually reaches the bloodstream compared to injections. This requires higher doses in pill form, which limits how many doses can be produced.

While these new pills are a step forward, they are not yet a replacement for injectables. Experts like Daniel Drucker, an endocrinologist at the University of Toronto, see them as complementary options rather than replacements. For now, injections remain more effective for significant weight loss, but oral drugs offer a convenient and less intimidating alternative for some patients.
