Yashasvi Jaiswal was India’s only shining light in a disappointing batting
performance during the Guwahati Test. The rest of the team collapsed, putting
India at risk of losing a Test at home for the second time in a row since Gautam
Gambhir became head coach.
After South Africa scored a massive 489 in their first innings and won the series
opener in Kolkata, India needed a big effort from their batsmen. Jaiswal gave
India a strong start, scoring 58 runs off 97 balls and building a 65-run
partnership with KL Rahul, who made 22.
Jaiswal Matches Sachin Tendulkar
Before being dismissed by Simon Harmer, 23-year-old Jaiswal made history by
scoring his 20th fifty-plus score in just his 28th Test, which includes seven
centuries. He now has 2,498 Test runs at an average of 49.9.
Jaiswal is only the second Indian, after Sachin Tendulkar, to score over 50 in
Tests before turning 24, and the first to do so in the 21st century. In the
148-year history of Test cricket, only six players have done this, including
Alastair Cook and Kane Williamson since the year 2000.
