Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York after being convicted of a first-degree criminal sexual act involving Miriam Haley, a former production assistant on Project Runway. The sentence was handed down on September 23, 2026, in a Manhattan courtroom.
The case relates to a 2006 incident involving Haley at Weinstein’s Manhattan apartment. Weinstein was convicted of the charge at a retrial in 2025, after his original 2020 New York conviction was overturned by the state’s highest court in 2024.
Manhattan prosecutors had asked Judge Curtis Farber to sentence Weinstein to 20 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. Prosecutors argued for a lengthy sentence based on the circumstances of the crime and the impact on Haley.
Weinstein’s defense team had requested a much shorter sentence of nine years, pointing to his age, declining health and the more than six years he has already spent in custody. Weinstein is 74 and appeared in court in a wheelchair.
During the sentencing hearing, Haley spoke about the long-term impact of the assault and the years of legal proceedings that followed. Weinstein also addressed the court. He expressed regret for Haley’s pain but continued to maintain his innocence.
Weinstein was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 after being convicted of assaulting Haley and raping actress Jessica Mann. However, New York’s Court of Appeals overturned those convictions in 2024 and ordered a new trial, finding that the original trial had been affected by testimony concerning allegations that were not part of the charges being decided.
At the 2025 retrial, Weinstein was again convicted in connection with Haley but was acquitted of another criminal sexual act charge involving Kaja Sokola. Jurors also failed to reach a verdict on the rape charge involving Mann. A later retrial on that charge also ended without a verdict, and prosecutors subsequently dropped it.
The New York offense carries a maximum sentence of 25 years. Weinstein also faces a separate sentence in California, where he was convicted in 2022 of rape and sexual assault and received a 16-year sentence. A California appeals court upheld those convictions in 2026 but ordered him to be resentenced.
Weinstein has continued to deny sexually assaulting anyone and plans to challenge his New York conviction and sentence through the appeals process.
The New York case has remained closely connected to the #MeToo movement, which gained worldwide attention after numerous women publicly accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct beginning in 2017. Weinstein has denied the allegations against him.
