James Cameron, the director of Avatar, has warned about the growing use of
generative AI in Hollywood. He said the idea of replacing human actors with
AI-generated characters and performances is not only wrong but also “horrifying.”
In an interview with Variety, Cameron explained his concerns, saying that this
trend could harm the art of filmmaking by taking away the human element that
actors bring to their roles. He emphasized that AI cannot fully replicate the
emotions, expressions, and creativity of real actors.
Cameron also shared that even during the making of the first Avatar film in 2005,
there were rumors that he planned to replace actors entirely with digital
characters. He said these ideas have resurfaced today with AI, and he finds
the thought deeply troubling.
The director’s warning highlights a growing debate in Hollywood about how far
AI should be used in films, especially when it comes to replacing people who
bring real talent and emotion to the screen.
