In the 2026-27 Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced increased funding for AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) to support traditional medicine and wellness in India.
The total allocation for AYUSH in the 2026-27 budget is ₹4,408 crore, which is higher than ₹3,992 crore in 2025-26 and ₹2,122 crore in 2020-21. This shows the government’s growing focus on promoting traditional medicine and health practices.
Earlier, India signed a new free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union, which makes it easier for Indian doctors, AYUSH practitioners, and products to enter the European market. The FTA is expected to boost the export of Indian medicines, herbal products, and wellness services, creating new opportunities for the sector.
The increased budget allocation will help fund AYUSH research, education, public health programs, and initiatives to integrate traditional medicine with modern healthcare. Experts say this is a positive step for both domestic growth and international expansion of India’s traditional health sector.
Overall, the combination of higher funding and easier access to the EU market could strengthen AYUSH, support practitioners, and promote India’s traditional medicine globally.
