International experts say ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are a serious threat to
health and action is needed worldwide to reduce them in diets.
They note that people are eating less fresh, whole foods and more cheap,
highly-processed meals, which can increase the risk of chronic diseases like
obesity and depression.
In a study published in The Lancet, researchers said governments should introduce
warnings and higher taxes on UPFs. The money raised could help make healthier
foods more accessible.
Some scientists, however, say the review does not prove that UPFs directly cause
health problems.
