Thiruvananthapuram Records Highest Stray Dog Bites

Thiruvananthapuram district has once again recorded the highest number of stray dog bites in Kerala. In 2025, a total of 58,108 people sought treatment for stray dog bites at government hospitals in the district. This is an increase of 8,000 cases compared to 2024. Experts say the actual number of dog bites may be even higher, as not everyone visits a hospital for treatment.

The problem of stray dog bites has also increased across Kerala. In 2025, the state reported 3.69 lakh dog bite cases, up from 3.17 lakh cases in 2024.

Rabies-related deaths are another serious concern. In 2025, a total of 33 people died due to rabies in Kerala, compared to 26 deaths in 2024. Of these, one death was recorded in Thiruvananthapuram.

Authorities say the rise in stray dog bites and rabies cases highlights the need for better awareness, vaccination drives, and animal control measures. Health experts urge residents to avoid contact with stray dogs, report bite cases immediately, and ensure timely post-exposure vaccination to prevent rabies.

With increasing numbers of stray dogs in urban and rural areas, the government is also considering stricter measures to control the population of stray animals and prevent further incidents.
