1.08 crore voters may be excluded from Karnataka’s first draft electoral roll

More than 1 crore voters in Karnataka could be left out of the first draft of the state’s electoral roll, according to the Election Commission. The draft voter list is scheduled to be released on August 24.

The development has raised concerns among voters because being left out of the electoral roll could prevent people from voting in future elections if their names are not corrected or added in time.

The Election Commission has identified more than 1 crore voter records that may need further verification. This could happen for different reasons, including changes in addresses, duplicate records, incorrect information or other issues with voter details.

After the draft electoral roll is published, voters will get an opportunity to check whether their names and details are correctly listed. The authorities will provide a period of about one month for people to submit claims, objections or requests for corrections.

Voters who find that their names are missing or that their personal details are incorrect can approach the election authorities and submit the necessary documents. People are also expected to check details such as their name, address and other voter information carefully.

Election officials will examine the claims and objections received during this period. After the verification process is completed, the final electoral roll will be prepared.

The Election Commission has urged voters to remain alert and check the draft list once it is released. This is especially important for people who have recently moved to a new address, first-time voters and those who may have changes or errors in their existing voter records.

The large number of voters requiring verification makes the process especially important in Karnataka. Political parties and civic groups are also expected to encourage people to check their names and make corrections where necessary.

For voters, the key message is simple: check the electoral roll and act quickly if your name or details are missing or incorrect. The claims and objections period will give people an opportunity to make sure they remain eligible to vote.
