Around 40% of people living in Chennai do not have a bus stop within easy walking distance, according to the Tamil Nadu Urban Mobility Charter 2031. The report was released on Wednesday by the Sustainable Mobility Network.
This means many residents have to walk long distances or use other transport just to reach a bus stop. This makes daily travel difficult, especially for elderly people, children, and those with disabilities.
The report highlights serious gaps in public transport services across the State. It says that most major cities in Tamil Nadu have far fewer buses than required for the population.
Currently, urban areas operate only about 18 buses for every one lakh people. However, the Central government recommends at least 60 buses for one lakh people. This shows there is a big shortage of buses.
Because of this shortage, buses are often overcrowded, and passengers face long waiting times. Many people are forced to depend on two-wheelers, cars, or auto-rickshaws, which increases traffic congestion and pollution in cities.
The charter stresses the need to improve public transport by adding more buses, increasing bus routes, and making bus stops easier to reach. It also calls for better planning to ensure safe, affordable, and comfortable travel for everyone.
Experts say improving bus connectivity is important to reduce traffic problems and make cities more people-friendly.
