About 82 lakh households across India have used the self-enumeration facility during the early Houselisting and Housing Operations (HLO) phase of Census 2027, according to a government statement released on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The self-enumeration option allows families to provide their census information online or through digital methods without waiting for field officials to visit their homes.
This new facility is aimed at making the census process easier, faster, and more convenient for citizens.
Following the completion of the 15-day self-enumeration period, field operations officially began on May 1 in several regions.
Enumerators started visiting households in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh to continue the HLO process.
These officials are responsible for collecting housing and household data directly from families who did not complete the self-enumeration process.
The Houselisting and Housing Operations phase is an important first step in Census 2027, helping the government gather key information about living conditions, housing, and household details across the country.
Officials say the strong participation in self-enumeration shows increasing public awareness and digital engagement in national data collection efforts.
The Census exercise is expected to provide important information for future planning, development programs, and policy decisions across India.
