The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has identified a suitable location near Keelakarai for the proposed greenfield airport at Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district. Officials said the new site appears to be favourable for building the airport based on technical studies.
According to AAI sources, a pre-feasibility report has already been prepared and submitted to the Tamil Nadu government. The report studies different factors such as land availability, safety, environmental impact, and technical requirements for constructing an airport.
The site identified is located near Keelakarai, close to Manikaneri and Mayakulam villages. Officials said the area has enough open land and meets the basic conditions needed to build airport infrastructure like runways, terminals, and other facilities.
Sources added that the location is considered technically feasible, meaning it is suitable for safe aircraft operations and future expansion. The land is relatively flat and accessible, which makes construction easier and more practical.
The proposed greenfield airport is expected to improve air connectivity to Rameswaram, which is an important pilgrimage and tourist destination. At present, visitors mostly depend on road and rail transport. A new airport could reduce travel time and attract more tourists and investments to the region.
Better air services may also help local businesses and create job opportunities for people in nearby towns and villages. The project is seen as a step towards boosting economic growth in Ramanathapuram district.
Officials said further studies and approvals will be required before the project moves to the next stage. Once clearances are obtained, the government is expected to begin the process of land acquisition and detailed planning.
