A group of 115 activists, academics, journalists and civil society members has urged the Telangana government to take immediate steps to improve basic facilities in government hospitals. The group raised concerns about poor cleanliness and hospital conditions, saying patients should not have to suffer in unhygienic surroundings while seeking affordable medical treatment.
In an open letter dated October 26, the signatories addressed Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Health Minister C Damodar Raja Narasimha. They called for urgent action to improve hospital facilities and ensure that patients receive medical care in a clean, safe and dignified environment.
The letter highlighted concerns about several major government hospitals in Hyderabad, including Osmania General Hospital, Gandhi Hospital, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Niloufer Hospital and Petlaburj Maternity Hospital. These hospitals provide treatment to large numbers of people, including patients who depend on government healthcare because they cannot afford expensive treatment at private hospitals.
The activists stressed that cleanliness and basic facilities are essential parts of healthcare. Poor sanitation, unclean surroundings and inadequate facilities can make hospital visits more difficult for patients and their families. They also argued that people seeking medical treatment should not have to face additional problems because of the condition of the hospitals.
Government hospitals play an important role in providing affordable healthcare to people from different economic backgrounds. Many patients travel long distances to receive treatment at these facilities. Therefore, maintaining clean wards, toilets and common areas is important for protecting patients’ health and ensuring their comfort.
The signatories called on the state government and health authorities to address these concerns without delay. They urged officials to take responsibility for maintaining hospital premises and ensuring that basic facilities meet acceptable standards.
The appeal has brought renewed attention to the need for better public healthcare infrastructure in Telangana. The activists said patients deserve proper medical care in a clean and respectful environment, regardless of their financial circumstances. Timely action by the government could help improve hospital conditions and strengthen public confidence in government healthcare services.
