MIAMI (AP) — Agustín Ramírez hit a home run, and Max Meyer pitched well into the sixth inning, helping the Miami Marlins defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Monday night. This win ended the Cardinals’ five-game winning streak.
Meyer, who has faced injuries since being drafted third overall in 2020, pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on three hits, two walks, and eight strikeouts before leaving the game. Calvin Faucher (2-2) got the final outs in the sixth inning but struggled a bit, letting the Cardinals tie the game temporarily. However, Miami quickly regained the lead.
In the ninth inning, Pete Fairbanks secured his fourth save by closing out the game despite allowing some baserunners. Meanwhile, Meyer started strong, hitting two Cardinals batters with pitches early on and then retiring 10 straight opponents.
For the Cardinals, Jordan Walker had a big night, extending his hitting streak to 15 games with an early single. However, the Marlins’ offense, led by Ramírez’s second home run in the fifth inning, took control of the game.
The Cardinals tied the game in the sixth inning but couldn’t hold on as Miami responded with two more runs. In the end, the Marlins’ strong pitching and timely hitting proved too much for St. Louis to overcome.
Dustin May is set to start for the Cardinals on Tuesday against Marlins pitcher Chris Paddack.
