Houston Rockets guard Amen Thompson has signed a huge five-year deal worth $208 million, keeping him with the team long-term. The contract includes a 10% trade kicker, similar to the deal Alperen Sengun got in 2024.
Thompson, 23, has become a key player for Houston since being picked fourth overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Last season, he set career highs with 18.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He also led the league in minutes played and ranked eighth in total steals.
Thompson’s ability to play multiple positions makes him a valuable asset. He can guard various roles or even step into the frontcourt, giving coach Ime Udoka flexibility on the court. This skill helped the Rockets win 52 games each of the last two seasons.
The team has now secured long-term deals for its young core, including Thompson, Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Tari Eason. Houston also recently extended Kevin Durant to a two-year deal with an option for 2027-28.
Thompson is one of only two 2023 draft players (along with Victor Wembanyama) to sign a rookie extension so far. Other top picks from his class are expected to follow suit soon.
