Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss said on Thursday
that the DMK’s protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the
voters list was only an attempt to divert people’s attention from the
growing anger among the public and the corruption charges against the party.
He said that there was no need for such a protest because the SIR is a
normal process carried out by the Election Commission of India to make
sure the voters list is accurate and up to date.
“The SIR helps clean the voters list,” Anbumani explained. “It was also
done in 2002, 2004, and 2005. This process helps find and remove
the names of people who have died, fake or duplicate entries, and
other errors in the list.”
He added that every constituency has thousands of names that must
be verified and corrected to make sure elections are fair and transparent.
Anbumani also said that instead of opposing the SIR, political parties
should support it because it strengthens democracy and ensures that only
genuine voters are included.
He pointed out that a clean and accurate voters list is important for free
and fair elections, and protests against such efforts only create confusion among the public.
“The Election Commission is doing its duty to protect the fairness of
the voting process,” he said. “All political parties should cooperate and
help maintain trust in the democratic system.”
