Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff has stepped down as head coach of the England Lions, ending his role less than two years after taking charge of the national development team.
Flintoff, 48, became the Lions head coach in September 2024. During his time with the team, he worked closely with some of England’s most promising young cricketers and helped prepare them for international-level cricket.
His decision to leave comes as he begins a new chapter in his coaching career in Australia. Flintoff became the head coach of Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL) in June. He will now focus fully on his new role with the Australian franchise.
In a statement, Flintoff said he had decided to leave his position with the Lions. He said he enjoyed working with young players and was proud to watch them improve during his time with the team.
Flintoff also thanked the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) staff for their support. He gave special thanks to performance director Ed Barney and managing director Rob Key for giving him the opportunity to lead the Lions.
Flintoff had originally planned to manage both jobs at the same time. However, the demands of his new position with Sydney Thunder have led him to make a full-time commitment to the Australian team.
His departure has been met with praise from the ECB. Ed Barney said Flintoff had made a strong contribution to the Lions program. According to Barney, Flintoff helped create an environment where young players were encouraged to improve, face challenges and develop their skills.
Flintoff’s return to cricket has been closely followed by fans. He stepped away from the sport for a period after suffering serious injuries in an accident while filming the BBC programme Top Gear. His return to coaching marked an important step in his cricket career.
During his time with the Lions, Flintoff focused on helping young players prepare for the challenges of professional cricket. His experience as a former England international gave the players an opportunity to learn from someone who had played at the highest level.
With Flintoff now leaving the role, England Under-19 head coach Mike Yardy will take charge of the Lions for their upcoming match against Pakistan. The ECB will continue to work on developing young players who could become future members of the England senior team.
Flintoff will now turn his attention to Sydney Thunder and the upcoming Big Bash League season. His new role will give him another opportunity to build his coaching career and work with players in a different cricket environment.
