The Assam Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has approved a
report from a Group of Ministers (GoM) recommending Scheduled Tribe (ST) status
for six communities in the State.
These communities are Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak, Moran, Tai Ahom, and the
“tea tribes” (Adivasis). The GoM is headed by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu,
with IT Minister Keshab Mahanta and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister
Pijush Hazarika as members.
