Australia Lead Despite Collapse on Record Ashes Day

Australia were bowled out for a low total of 152 runs but still took a 42-run lead over England in the first innings on the opening day of the fourth Ashes Test on Friday (December 26, 2025). The day produced plenty of action, with 20 wickets falling, making it an exciting contest for fans.

Both teams struggled to settle at the crease as bowlers dominated throughout the day. England managed to take quick wickets, but their own batting also failed to last long, allowing Australia to gain a small but important lead.

The match was played in front of a world-record crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. A huge turnout of 94,199 spectators filled the stadium, setting a new record for the highest attendance on a single day of cricket. This surpassed the previous record of 93,013, which was set during the 2015 World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand at the same venue.

The packed stands and lively atmosphere added to the excitement of the opening day. Officials and players said the record crowd showed the strong appeal of the Ashes series and the enduring popularity of Test cricket.
