In a decision that may face opposition, Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor of
the Interim Government, Muhammad Yunus, has announced that a referendum
will be held along with the national elections in February next year.
It will take place in the first half of February. This will not stop our
reform goals. Instead, it will make the election more exciting and helpful
for us. We will make all the needed arrangements for it.”
The idea of holding a referendum has been controversial in Bangladesh.
The Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami supports it, while the main opposition
party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), strongly opposes it.
