US Open runner-up Ben Shelton has withdrawn from the 2026 Laver Cup, with world No. 16 Brandon Nakashima stepping in to represent Team World. Shelton’s absence was confirmed on Thursday, just eight days after he lost the Flushing Meadows final to Alexander Zverev.
Shelton is now focused on playing for the US Davis Cup team in the Czech Republic, starting this Friday. This comes less than a week after his first Grand Slam final. The 23-year-old has reached a career-high No. 4 in the ATP rankings.
Nakashima, 25, will make his Laver Cup debut in London from September 25-27. He joins Team World alongside players like Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz, under captains Andre Agassi and Patrick Rafter.
“I’m really excited to be making my Laver Cup debut,” Nakashima said. “It’s an event I’ve always dreamed of playing, and I can’t wait to help the team.”
Nakashima arrives in strong form, having won 13 matches during the North American hard-court swing and reaching his first ATP Masters 1000 final in Montreal. His recent success has pushed him to a career-high No. 16.
Team World aims to defend their title, which they won in San Francisco last year. The event returns to London after a four-year absence.
Meanwhile, Team Europe, led by Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz, is preparing for the match. The Laver Cup format mirrors the Ryder Cup, with points awarded each day until one team reaches 13.
With Shelton out, Nakashima brings a different style to Team World, including a reliable serve and strong hard-court game. His addition will be key as Team World looks to keep the trophy in London and secure another win for captain Agassi.
