Bombay High Court Grants Bail to Two Activists

The Bombay High Court on Friday, January 23, 2026, granted bail to activists Sagar Gorkhe and Ramesh Gaichor in the Elgar Parishad Maoist links case. The court gave them relief on the grounds of parity, which means that since other accused persons in the same case have already been granted bail, they should receive similar treatment.

Gorkhe and Gaichor were arrested in September 2020 in connection with alleged links to Maoist groups. Since their arrest, they have been in judicial custody and are currently lodged in Taloja Central Prison near Mumbai.

Their lawyers argued that they had been in jail for several years without the trial being completed and that other co-accused had already received bail. After hearing the arguments, the High Court decided to grant them bail, saying they should not be treated differently from others in the same case.

The Elgar Parishad case relates to alleged Maoist connections and speeches made at an event held in Pune in 2017. The case has led to the arrest of several activists and has been widely discussed in political and legal circles.

With the High Court’s order, Gorkhe and Gaichor are expected to be released from prison after completing the bail formalities.
