Brendan Taylor Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Longest ODI Career Record

Zimbabwean cricketer Brendan Taylor has created a new record by becoming the player with the longest ODI career in international cricket, surpassing the legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

Taylor achieved the record during Zimbabwe’s first ODI against Australia in Harare on September 15, 2026. His ODI career has now lasted 22 years and 146 days, moving him ahead of Tendulkar’s long-standing record.

Taylor made his ODI debut for Zimbabwe in 2004 and went on to become one of the country’s most important and experienced players. Over the years, he played a major role in Zimbabwean cricket and became known for his consistent batting and leadership.

His cricket journey has also included a difficult period away from the sport. Taylor retired from international cricket in 2021 but later returned after completing a three-and-a-half-year ban related to violations of anti-corruption and anti-doping rules.

His return comes at an important time for Zimbabwe, as the country is preparing to be one of the hosts of the 2027 ODI World Cup, along with South Africa and Namibia. Taylor’s experience could provide valuable support to Zimbabwe’s squad as they prepare for the tournament.

As of September 15, 2026, Taylor has played 207 ODIs and has scored 11 centuries in the format. His long international career has made him one of Zimbabwe’s most recognised cricketers.

Although Taylor has now taken the record for the longest ODI career, Sachin Tendulkar continues to hold several major ODI records. The former India star has scored 18,426 ODI runs, the highest total in the history of the format. Tendulkar also holds the record for the most ODI appearances, having played 463 matches.

Other legendary players also feature among the longest ODI careers. Former Sri Lankan star Sanath Jayasuriya had an ODI career lasting 21 years and 184 days, while Pakistan great Javed Miandad is also among the players with exceptionally long ODI careers.

Taylor’s Zimbabwe teammate Sean Williams is currently ranked fifth on the list of players with the longest ODI careers.

Taylor’s latest achievement is a significant moment for Zimbabwean cricket. After more than two decades in international cricket, his return to the field and new record have added another memorable chapter to his career. His experience will also be important as Zimbabwe continues preparing for the 2027 World Cup.
