Campaigning for Bangladesh’s 13th Jatiya Sangsad election has officially started today after the Election Commission announced the final list of candidates and allotted election symbols.
With the symbols assigned, political parties and independent candidates can now openly ask for votes while following the election code of conduct.
According to the Election Commission, nearly 2,000 candidates are contesting for 300 parliamentary seats across the country. Voting will take place on February 12. A nationwide referendum will also be held on the same day.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will begin its official campaign from Sylhet. Party chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to join rallies in seven districts on the first day.
Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman will also launch his campaign today from the Dhaka-15 constituency. He plans to visit eight districts in the northern region over the next two days.
With campaigning now underway, political activity is expected to increase across the country in the coming weeks.
