The CGST Chennai North office has uncovered a big fake GST invoice scam.
The scam involved creating false bills worth about ₹300 crore and claiming
fake Input Tax Credit (ITC) of ₹50.85 crore.
Officers have arrested the main suspect, K Junaid Ahmed. He was running an
unregistered tax consultancy called AS Associates in Chennai, Bengaluru, and
Vaniyambadi.
GST officials said the group created more than 95 fake business firms using ID
details of people from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These fake firms were used to
claim and pass on ITC without any real goods being sold or moved. Many leather
businesses in Vaniyambadi benefited from this fraud.
The scam was discovered through digital tracking, including checking IP addresses
used for filing GST returns.
