Chattogram Port Paralysed as Workers Continue Strike

In Bangladesh, operations at Chattogram Port came to a standstill yesterday as workers and employees continued their work stoppage. The protest has badly affected port activities, and the export sector is facing the biggest problems.

Because of repeated suspensions of work, cargo movement at the port has slowed down. As a result, a large number of export containers have piled up at private inland container depots. Before the protests began, around 8,000 containers were waiting. By Monday afternoon, the number had increased to more than 10,000.

Exporters and shipping agents said the delays are disrupting vessel schedules. Ships are unable to load goods on time, leading to late departures and postponed shipments. This could affect trade and cause financial losses for businesses.

Port workers have been staging daily protests since Saturday. They are stopping work for eight hours every day under the banner of the Chattogram Bandar Rakkha Sangram Parishad. The workers are opposing the government’s decision to lease the New Mooring Container Terminal to DP World, a company based in the United Arab Emirates.

The workers fear that the move could affect their jobs and working conditions. They are demanding that the government reconsider its decision.

Meanwhile, port users and traders have expressed concern that if the disruption continues, it could lead to higher prices of goods, especially with Ramadan approaching. Longer delays at the port could slow down the supply of essential items.

Importers, including garment exporters, are also facing difficulties as they are not receiving raw materials on time. This could affect production and delivery schedules.

Officials and business groups are urging both sides to find a quick solution to avoid further damage to trade and the economy.
