Chennai Clears Marina Shops for Blue Flag Beach

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Sunday removed several shops along Marina Beach as part of a special drive to clear space for the second phase of the Blue Flag beach project.

Officials said the action was taken to prepare the identified stretch of the beach for Blue Flag certification, which focuses on cleanliness, safety, and environmental standards. The civic body has stepped up the removal drive as the second phase of the project is expected to be launched later this month.

Authorities explained that clearing temporary shops and structures is necessary to create more open space, improve public facilities, and meet the strict requirements needed for Blue Flag status. Once completed, the upgraded beach area is expected to offer better amenities, improved cleanliness, and a safer environment for visitors and tourists.

The Corporation said the work is being carried out in phases and efforts are being made to complete all preparations on time for the launch of the second phase.
