Out of the 18 full-time libraries in the city, only a few are able to
celebrate library week properly because many buildings are under renovation by
the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and the Directorate of
Public Libraries (DPL).
Officials said that major libraries like Ashok Nagar, Anna Nagar, and Gandhi
Nagar cannot hold events because there is not enough space during the ongoing
repair work. The newly renovated Periyar Nagar library is also not expected to
have any big celebrations this week, they added.
Every year, libraries across Tamil Nadu usually hold book reading sessions, book
fairs, membership drives, extempore competitions, talks by well-known people about
reading habits, and special honours for long-time members from November 14 to 21.
