The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to carry out road improvement works worth nearly ₹100 crore across the city. The civic body wants to complete these projects before the dates for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are announced. However, the plan has raised doubts among residents and civic activists about whether the works can actually begin and finish on time.
According to officials, the projects include relaying damaged roads, repairing potholes, and improving important stretches that see heavy traffic. Many roads in the city have been in poor condition due to recent rains, regular wear and tear, and frequent digging for utility works. The GCC hopes that these repairs will make travel smoother and safer for motorists and pedestrians.
But residents are worried about the timing of the announcement. Once the Election Commission declares the poll schedule, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will come into effect. After that, government departments cannot start new development works without special permission. This rule is meant to ensure that public money is not used to influence voters during elections.
People fear that if the code comes into force before the projects begin, the road works may be delayed or even cancelled. They also pointed out that many officials and staff members may be assigned election duties, which could slow down regular civic work.
Some residents said that similar projects announced before past elections were either rushed or left incomplete. They urged the GCC to plan properly and ensure quality work rather than hurrying just to meet deadlines.
Civic experts believe that completing such a large amount of work in a short time could be challenging. Road relaying usually requires careful preparation, proper materials, and good weather conditions. If done in a hurry, the roads may not last long and could develop potholes again.
GCC officials, however, said they are trying to start the works quickly and finish as much as possible before the election process begins. They added that priority will be given to badly damaged roads and busy areas.
With the election dates likely to be announced soon, the success of the ₹100-crore road plan will depend on how fast the corporation can move and whether it can complete the projects before restrictions come into place.
