Chest Pain vs Stroke Symptoms: What You Need to Know

Chest pain is widely recognised as a serious medical emergency that requires immediate attention. However, when someone experiences a stroke, the warning signs are sometimes mistaken for tiredness, weakness or low blood pressure. This misunderstanding can delay medical treatment and increase the risk of serious health problems.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Without enough oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to get damaged. A stroke can affect a person’s ability to speak, move, see or understand what is happening around them.

One of the most common warning signs is a sudden change in the face. A person’s face may droop on one side, and they may find it difficult to smile normally. Another warning sign is weakness or numbness in one arm. When asked to raise both arms, the person may be unable to lift one arm properly.

Speech problems are another important symptom. A person may suddenly struggle to speak clearly, slur their words or find it difficult to understand simple sentences. Other possible warning signs include sudden loss of vision, dizziness, difficulty walking, loss of balance or a severe headache that appears without a clear reason.

Unfortunately, some families may believe that the person is simply tired or experiencing low blood pressure. They may ask the person to lie down, drink water or rest for some time. However, waiting to see whether the symptoms disappear can be dangerous because stroke treatment is time-sensitive.

Doctors use the simple method FAST to help people recognise the main warning signs of a stroke:

  • F – Face: Check whether one side of the face is drooping.
  • A – Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms and check whether one arm falls or feels weak.
  • S – Speech: Listen for slurred speech or difficulty speaking.
  • T – Time: Call emergency services immediately if any of these symptoms appear.

If someone suddenly develops these symptoms, seek emergency medical help immediately. In India, people can call 112 for emergency assistance. Do not wait for the symptoms to improve, and do not attempt to treat the person at home. Note the time when the symptoms first appeared, as this information can help doctors decide on treatment.

Quick medical attention can make a major difference in stroke recovery. Some treatments work only within specific time windows, and doctors must assess the patient urgently to determine the safest and most suitable option. Delays can increase the risk of permanent disability or death.

Public awareness about stroke symptoms is essential because a stroke can affect people of different ages. Knowing the warning signs and acting quickly can help families make the right decision during an emergency.

Recognising a stroke early and getting immediate medical care can save lives, reduce brain damage and improve the chances of recovery. When stroke symptoms appear suddenly, do not assume the person only needs rest — seek emergency medical help immediately.
