The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has stepped up its efforts to prevent illegal sewage dumping as part of a larger mission to reduce pollution in Chennai’s waterbodies and open spaces.
In recent inspections, CMWSSB officials seized two sewage tanker lorries that were caught illegally disposing of untreated sewage into the city’s storm-water drain system. One vehicle was found dumping sewage in Adayalampattu, while the other was caught on R.K. Shanmugam Salai in K.K. Nagar.
According to officials, these operations were carried out during night patrols by teams from Area XI and Area X. Such inspections have been intensified because illegal sewage disposal often happens after dark to avoid detection.
The seized vehicles were taken to the Nolambur sewage pumping station and the K.K. Nagar water distribution station for further investigation. Authorities said legal action is now being taken against the vehicle operators, and police support has also been sought.
CMWSSB officials warned that unauthorized dumping of sewage into storm-water drains, open lands, or waterbodies can seriously damage the environment. It pollutes lakes, rivers, and groundwater, creates health risks for nearby residents, and can lead to foul smells and disease outbreaks.
The board has been increasing surveillance across various parts of the city to identify offenders and prevent such activities. Officials also urged residents to report suspicious sewage dumping to help protect Chennai’s waterways and maintain public health.
This crackdown is part of Chennai’s broader strategy to improve sanitation, preserve natural water resources, and ensure stricter enforcement of environmental regulations.
