The Congress-led Telangana government under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is stepping up civic reforms ahead of elections to three newly formed municipal corporations in Hyderabad — GHMC, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri.
The government recently divided the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three separate corporations: GHMC, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri. Officials say this decision was taken to improve governance, bring administration closer to the people, and ensure faster delivery of civic services.
As part of the preparations for the upcoming elections, the government has intensified sanitation drives, infrastructure development, and efforts to improve revenue collection. Special focus is being given to road repairs, drainage systems, waste management, and street lighting. Authorities are also working on new revenue models to strengthen the financial position of the corporations.
The trifurcation is officially being presented as a step toward decentralisation. By creating smaller municipal bodies, the government aims to make local governance more efficient and responsive to residents’ needs.
However, political observers believe there is also a strategic angle behind the move. Hyderabad has long been considered a stronghold of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). By focusing on civic improvements and restructuring local governance, the Congress hopes to expand its support base in urban areas and challenge BRS in the upcoming municipal elections.
With elections approaching, both major parties are expected to step up their campaigns, making civic development a key issue in the political battle for Hyderabad.
