The Karnataka state government, led by the Congress party, is facing backlash and condemnation from Hindu organizations and the BJP after it decided to stop releasing funds for temple renovation and development work.
The order, issued by the state’s Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department, states that funds will be withheld if renovation work is not undertaken, and even administrative approval for fund release will be held back.
Former Muzrai and Waqf Minister and BJP MLA Shahikala Jolle criticized the decision, asserting that temples hold great cultural significance and should not be treated with a prejudiced mindset. She urged the government to reconsider the decision and release the allocated funds for temple renovation. The move has sparked controversy as temples have seen increased footfall and donations due to a free travel scheme.
