Chennai Corporation councillors have asked the civic body to return to the old system
of giving roadwork contracts zone by zone. They said the current method—where roadworks
are combined into large packages and given to a few big contractors—is creating many problems.
According to the councillors, this system causes long delays, poor-quality work, and also
increases the chances of corruption because fewer contractors handle larger areas.
They also pointed out that the DMK had promised in its 2021 Assembly election manifesto to
change this package system and bring back zone-wise tenders. However, the councillors said
that this promise has still not been fulfilled, and the problems continue. They urged the
Corporation to take action soon so that roadwork can be completed faster and with better
quality.
