Chennai: After the results of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were announced, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, has emerged as a major political force for the first time.
The party has won 108 seats, making it the single largest party in the Assembly. However, it is still short of the 118 seats required to form a majority government.
To reach the majority mark, TVK needs support from other parties. The Congress party, which won 5 seats, has already announced its support for TVK.
In addition, TVK has been actively reaching out to other parties, including Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Left parties such as CPI and CPM, to secure additional support.
Earlier, TVK general secretary Nirmal Kumar sent formal letters seeking support from these parties. He also personally met leaders of CPI and CPM at their party offices and requested their backing.
Both CPI and CPM had earlier said they would announce their decision on May 8. Following this, the Communist Party of India (CPI) has now officially announced unconditional support to TVK.
A formal letter confirming their support was handed over to TVK representative Nirmal Kumar at the party office.
With this development, TVK is now closer to reaching the required numbers needed to form the government. However, discussions are still ongoing with VCK and other smaller parties to secure additional support.
The political situation in Tamil Nadu remains dynamic, with alliances and negotiations continuing as parties work towards forming a stable government after a closely contested election.
