Cricket Canada has chosen Monty Desai as the new head coach of the men’s national team, as announced by the country’s cricket governing body on Friday.
This decision comes after Canada’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and ahead of important upcoming international competitions. It is seen as a key step toward improving the team’s performance and achieving more consistency on the global stage.
Arvinder Khosa, President of Cricket Canada, stated that the primary goal is to bring back the sport’s prominence through success, hard work, and renewed determination. He highlighted that Desai’s experience with smaller cricket nations, such as Nepal and Afghanistan, shows his ability to transform teams using strong leadership, discipline, and a long-term plan.
Desai has over 20 years of international coaching experience, including leading Nepal to regain their One-Day International status and qualify for multiple ICC global events. He is known for building belief, structure, and competitive spirit in developing cricket nations.
“I am honored to take on this responsibility and thank Cricket Canada for their trust,” Desai said. “My past experience in Canada has given me a clear understanding of the system’s potential and the passion for the game. I will focus on creating a culture that turns this country’s potential into consistent international performances.”
This appointment aligns with Cricket Canada’s commitment to strengthening the sport through better accountability, improved player development, and an environment that supports long-term growth.
“Monty’s track record with teams like Nepal and Afghanistan speaks for itself,” said Paramjit Saini, Secretary of Cricket Canada. “We are fully committed to supporting him as we work together to raise Canadian cricket to new heights.”
With key international matches ahead, Canada aims to build consistency, credibility, and a stronger reputation on the world stage.
