The Detroit Red Wings have named Shawn Horcoff as their interim General Manager (GM) just two days before training camp begins. This move comes while they continue their search for a permanent replacement for Steve Yzerman, who was removed from the role on July 15.
Horcoff, 47, will oversee daily roster decisions, salary cap management, and hockey operations staff. He will report to Chris Ilitch, the team’s governor and CEO. Yzerman remains with the organization as a senior advisor to Ilitch.
Ilitch described Horcoff’s appointment as a temporary solution while they conduct a thorough search for a new GM. He praised Horcoff’s deep knowledge of the organization and experience, stating that he has full authority to make decisions in the best interest of the team.
Horcoff has been with the Red Wings since 2016, holding roles including director of player development, assistant director of player personnel, and assistant GM. He also served as the GM of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. His background as a player, combined with his experience in player development and management, makes him a strong candidate for the interim role.
The team emphasized that Horcoff is still considered a top contender for the permanent GM position. Detroit has yet to set a deadline for filling the role and will provide updates when they have significant news to share.
