Chennai will soon see the return of its famous double decker buses, almost
20 years after they were stopped in 2008. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation
(MTC) has added 20 new electric double decker buses to its fleet, and they are
expected to start running in the next two months.
Double decker buses were once very popular on routes like Tambaram–Broadway (18A).
People enjoyed them because they could seat more passengers and offered a nice
view of the city from the top deck. But the buses were stopped due to heavy
traffic and the construction of many flyovers.
The new electric double decker buses will be an important improvement to Chennai’s
public transport. They are likely to run on busy routes and on special heritage
routes. These buses will offer more comfort and are good for the environment.
The introduction of these electric buses also supports Tamil Nadu’s clean air
and electric vehicle goals. They provide more seating without causing pollution.
This move is expected to make travel easier, reduce traffic, and make public
transport more attractive.
By bringing back double decker buses, MTC hopes to revive a popular old tradition
while using modern electric technology to build a cleaner and better transport
system for Chennai.
