End of Armed Maoism in Chhattisgarh; Focus Now on Bastar Development

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma announced that armed Maoism has been completely eliminated in Chhattisgarh by the March 31 deadline. The state government now prioritizes development in Bastar, focusing on preserving tribal culture and creating economic opportunities for youth.

Sharma emphasized strengthening Bastar’s economy through minor forest produce and women-led self-help groups. He stated that remaining Maoist cadres are expected to surrender soon. Development remains the biggest challenge in Bastar, once a Maoist stronghold, but Sharma clarified that there is no direct link between lack of development and insurgency.

He noted that development is an ongoing process, similar to other regions like Surguja, where Maoism was eliminated over a decade ago but challenges persist. Sharma expressed confidence in Bastar’s youth talent, believing they could achieve global recognition by 2036. He also highlighted the potential of women in leading the region’s economy through self-help groups.

Sharma assured that no plans exist for increased mining activities in Bastar, dismissing rumors circulating about such developments. The government remains committed to sustainable and inclusive growth for the region.
