Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s planned public appearance near The Shard in London was cancelled after the Metropolitan Police raised concerns about crowd safety. Hundreds of supporters had gathered near the landmark hoping to meet or see him during his ongoing UK visit.
Many supporters had reportedly waited for several hours before Vijay’s team announced that the programme would not take place. A member of his team told the crowd that the event was being cancelled because the required permission could not be obtained due to public safety concerns.
The cancellation left many supporters disappointed, particularly those who had travelled long distances and spent hours waiting near the venue. The large gathering prompted authorities to focus on managing the crowd and ensuring public safety.
Vijay is currently in the UK as part of a Tamil Nadu government investment outreach visit aimed at attracting international investment to the state. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the delegation has signed several Memoranda of Understanding involving proposed investments of around ₹12,300 crore during the visit. The projects are expected to generate more than 9,400 jobs, according to officials.
Following the cancellation, Vijay’s party also appealed to supporters not to gather outside his hotel or wait along his route in an attempt to meet him, citing safety concerns.
Vijay is expected to complete his UK visit and return to India on Wednesday. The cancelled appearance does not affect the scheduled investment-related activities of the delegation.
